Oranmore Update
We re-opened in early September in the first month we had an influx of new members of all ages, shapes and sizes. Club nights are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the community center from 8 30.
Our first in-House tournament had a massive entry of 40 members. This was organized by Trevor and armed with his laptop he provided excellent competitions for all grades. The beginner’s competition was the highlight of the two night competition. The hero/star of this was our skillful German Markus. His defensive play was first rate and he looked resplendent in his new shorts. The three shy sisters (Marie,Elaine,Noirin) who also joined this year played some great badminton throughout the tournament. Lady Rosie is busy preparing for our Christmas party at which the prizes for the In-house tournament will be presented. We are all hoping that the Christmas party will take place around about Christmas this year not in April as happened last year. We all understand that Rosie is busy but hopefully she will be able to fit it in between mid-term breaks, vacation, holidays, sick-days, training days , staff days and parent teacher days.
Our congrats to Deirdre who got married recently. We understand that some of our members traveled to Mayo for the wedding. They had to get a special visa to enter Mayo for the day. Even Kathy was allowed across the border and rumour has it that she wore a designer gown. We hear that one of the highlights of the day was an Irish dance display by Deirdre and her sisters. We think that Deirdre’s nifty footwork could be as a result of her Irish dance training and our coach has suggested that Anthony, Mick and Lyall sign- up for classes right away. Mary do you think you could do anything with such poor material. The badminton development officer Tom Hehir visited the club last month and he spent several hours working with the members. The feedback we got was excellent and another session will be organized for later this month We also had some very experienced players join the club this year and as a result we are fielding 6 teams in the inter club leagues. We have entered a team in Div 1, two teams in Div 2, a team in Div 4, a team in Div 5, and a team in Div 6. The leagues start in early November and we look forward in particular to the clash between our two division 2 teams. The Galway double championships are also on in November so anyone wishing to enter these should give their name to Deirdre.
Finally we would like to thank Noel who showed up for 1 night , Adrian who has promised to return to activity next week and look forward to Lee returning from his brief exile in Derry Our thanks to those who agreed to organize the league games for the various teams( Lyall,Tom, Kathy,Trevor,Carmel, and Anthony) and to those who helped out with beginners (Liam and Tom) Anyway we look forward to a great season and lots of fun..

We are back starting Next Monday 7th
We are back starting Next Monday 7th at 8:30PM September!!! ready for a new year.. New competitions, new league and new friends

Oranmore Badminton Club Capture League Title
Oranmore Badminton Club are finishing the season on a real high after winning the Connacht and Galway County Division 3 League finals. The County Final was held on April 18th in GLTC resulting in a very exciting 4-2 victory over Claregalway. From there it was on to the Connacht Finals where the team had a great victory over Carrick-on-Shannon (4-1).
Back Row:Enda O`Connor, Derek Small, Ted Curren
Front Row:Aoife Mooney, Deirdre O`Donnell, Miriam Farrell
While the club has representatives in a number of Divisions in the Galway badminton leagues this is the first Division 3 title to be won since 1996. The team will now represent Connacht at the All Ireland Club Finals which will be held at Baldoyle, Dublin in May. We wish them luck.

Oranmore News

In the Mixed Badminton Leagues there are a number of teams in contention for play off places.  In Division 3 Derek Small and his team continue to set the pace and should finish in a county final position, while in Division 4 the team are battling for a play off place with Oughterard and New Inn.  In Division 6 Cortoon will top the table but Oranmore are well placed for a semi final position if they can withstand the challenge of Loughrea. Overall it makes for a very exciting end to the season.  The county finals will be held in GLTC on Saturday, April 18th.
